About UsI have always loved animals, and ever since I can remember, I wanted to become a dog trainer. I'd seen fascinating TV shows where trainers transformed dogs from unruly, often aggressive or dangerous, into focused, loveable companions. With such an amazing turn around, it seemed to me that the dogs were simply misunderstood, and their owners needed help to change them around. I wanted to help people and dogs in the same way, so my interest and passion for training dogs began.
In 2011 I was certified as a professional dog trainer by Master Dog Trainer Tony Parker at the Canadian Institute of Professional Dog Training. Before that, I was working in a busy boarding kennel dealing with all different breeds and their varying temperaments, and have since spent many more years working in different kennels. I've also assisted and worked with several experienced trainers, and I strive to continue learning about modern dog training practices. I'm passionate about training and dedicated to keeping it positive and fun for everyone. I believe that education doesn't just end with a certificate; I'm always looking to refine my skills and knowledge as a trainer, with special interests in working with reactive dogs, and dog sports training. Kaori, my high-energy German Shepherd Dog, has been by my side through all of this. She has helped me learn to be thoughtful and precise in my training. From bike riding and playing fetch, to dabbling in tracking, agility and flyball, to competing in Rally-O, we've done everything together! Fun activities aside, I have worked hard to help Kaori move past her reactivity issues - there was a time when she couldn't be within 100 ft. of a dog without lunging and barking. Now when she's focusing on me in a roomful of dogs, or helping me work with another reactive dog, it's hard to remember what she used to be like! |

Training Methods |
At Brave Quest Canine Services, we focus on reward-based training and techniques that ensure everyone is having a good time. Every dog is different, and what motivates one dog may not motivate another - luckily, there are many motivators to choose from, including verbale praise, physical praise, food, toys/play and freedom. Once a powerful motivator is determined, we use marker training to lure, shape or capture behaviours we want the dog to repeat more often. Then we put those behaviours on cue. Once the dog demonstrates a strong response to verbal cues and hand signals (without lures or bribes in hand), we move on to generalization and proofing games to ensure the dog understands the training and cues in all environments, and develops strong self-control even in the face of distractions.
